A fine example of an antique silver mote spoon. Hallmarked London 1914, markers mark Alfred James How (AJH).
Antique silver mote spoons were used for skimming dust motes from the surface of a cup of tea a common problem for tea drinkers at a time when the product was carried in wooden chests. The long spiked handle was used to unclog any clumps of tea from a teapot spout.
This silver spoon has an oval rounded shaped form with a narrow stem handle and pointed finial. The bowl is ornamented with pierced stylised decoration in addition to an arrangement of quatrefoil designs.
Good piercing and hallmarks, with no damage or repair.
